As a CPA firm, we tend to focus on the technical skills. Is it enough?
Technical skills do not mean much if we do not connect with the outside world. The outside world is not too good at judging our technical skills. Of course minimum skills are necessary, and it will probably require minimum 2 years of solid work focusing on accounting skills. But I believe there are a lot more things that needs to be done to make us look smart.
I think CPA exams do a poor job in understanding the fundamentals of tax and accounting. It is not good enough. Daily jobs will do better, but also are not good enough without extra studies. The extra studies are what will make you different from others. Solid understanding can be gained by repetition, and I recommend you to re-visit what you are doing and try to understand the theory and the reasons behind all the rules and regulations. This should be done mainly individually, and the company should help. Let me know if you have any good suggestions in this area.
In the mean time, the company needs to make each team members look smarter than they actually are. This is where "client connection" and "Two Miles Experience" kicks in. This is the area#2 I wrote about yesterday. It needs good amount of thinking and leadership. No matter how much technical skills we will accumulate, we will not look too good without the endeavor by the company in this area.
Who will lead us to make us look smart? CXO wanted.
