Accumulating knowledge
The most obvious and also important intangible asset of an accounting firm is knowledge. Knowledge of the individual team members as well as the team as a whole.
In order to develop a professional knowledge, useful to consult our clients, we need deep knowledge. I like to call it “real knowledge.” The process of developing real knowledge in the team, in my opinion is as follows;
1. Sync individual and team study to actual work
2. Sync such knowledge to the requirements/needs of the target market
3. Build up such knowledge and share it amongst the team members
4. Reach out to the new requirements/needs of the market and challenge new areas
I believe the development of our team in terms of knowledge should be a repeated cycle of the above 4 steps. We need to be consciously assessing ourselves, of which market we are targeting in, constantly studying on our own deeply about the issues we face through actual work (step 1 and 2), share with the team members of such knowledge (step 3), and see if there are any areas that we should be focusing our study on (step 4). And then we start to study about the topic (step 1 and 2).
The above process if repeated with clear strategy, should not only make our knowledge a “real knowledge,” but also make our work purposeful and satisfying.
